11.3. Grants

Disability grant
If your CD4 count falls below 200, you can qualify for this grant of R1010/month. If you go on ARVs and your CD4 count rises above 200, you can still get the grant if a doctor says that it is necessary. A means test that looks at your income is used to decide if you are eligible to qualify. If you require intensive care and nursing, you may be able to qualify for extra assistance.
Foster care grant
If you are the official foster parent of a child, you can apply for a foster care grant. You have to provide the child with enough food, medical care, clothing, schooling and shelter.
Care dependency grant
A care dependency grant is meant for children who are ill or disabled and need special care. It can be used for children who are ill with AIDS. Parents, foster parents or anyone who is responsible for looking after the child can apply. You can get a care dependency grant even if you already have a foster grant.
Child support grant
This grant is for all children under 15 years. (From January 2010 the grant will be for kids under 16, going up to 18 by 2012. A means test is used to work out if you need financial help with this grant.
Social relief
Social workers can also give temporary relief for people who are in urgent need of support. Sometimes you can wait for a few months for your grant and the social worker can help you while you are waiting by giving you food or money. It will not be a lot and it will only be given to you for a short time.
Unemployment insurance
If you have been employed your employer may have paid unemployment insurance (UIF). When you become unemployed, you can claim an insurance benefit from the UIF Fund which is based on your previous salary. You can therefore receive some money every month until you find another job. UIF forms are usually available at the offices of the Department of Labour.
How do I apply for a grant?
* Go to a South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office, previously known as a Social Development District Office. You can call their Grants Helpline (Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm), free from a landline: 0800 60 10 11.
* If there is no office near you, go to the nearest magistrate's court.
* You will need different papers for different grants. The social worker will give you a list.
* On your first visit, take your ID book and any other proof you have that may be needed for the application.
